热带生物资源教育部重点实验室依托海南大学，于2005年10月经教育部批准筹建，2007年12月通过教育部组织专家验收，2008年2月起正式以教育部重点实验室的名义开放运行，实验室面积3100多平方米，购置了蛋白分离鉴定系统、发酵系统、液－质联用仪、核磁共谱仪、电镜等有关生物、药物和化学相关的一批先进精密仪器100多台套，价值4600余万元。
实验室主要对我国南海海洋生物资源及热带地区丰富的陆地生物资源的利用进行研究，加强我国热带海洋和陆生生物的基础和应用基础研究，并提高研究水平及促进学科建设。热带生物资源教育部重点实验室，以热带生物资源的研究与利用为目的开展科学研究工作，服务于我国热带地区的经济发展。实验室确立了与海南社会经济发展密切相关特色鲜明的四个研究方向。
根据国家有重点地发展基础科学研究的方针，本着“充实、完善、凝炼、提升”的思想，实行“开放、流动、联合、竞争”的运行机制，利用现代生物技术手段，运用共建共享的机制，将重点实验室构建成为布局合理、功能齐全、开放高效、体系完备的开放型科研平台。
自开放运行以来，该实验室已成为我校培养研究生及多个学科交叉的科研平台，具有良好的学科基础，形成了一支年龄与知识结构合理化的高水平研究队伍，涵盖与热带生物资源相关的生物学、生物化学、药学、生物材料学、水产养殖、食品科学与工程、化学工程与技术等专业。实验室现有固定人员49名，其中教授/研究员37名、具有博士学位的学术骨干43名，40岁以下的中青年学术骨干教师占比达40%，梯队年轻化。
近五年来，实验室在研纵向课题共186项，横向课题26项，五年科研经费总计9379.39万元。其中“973”计划课题2项、“863”计划4项、国家科技支撑计划6项、科技部“重大新药创制”科技重大专项1项、科技部农业成果转化项目5项、科技部国际科技合作项目5项、国家自然科学基金重点国际合作研究项目3项、国家自然科学基金面上项目5项、国家自然科学基金项目青年基金3项、国家海洋局项目3项、教育部创新团队1个、农业部“农业科研杰出人才及其创新团队”1个。获海南省科学技术进步奖12项、发表论文292篇，其中发表SCI/EI收录论文122篇，出版专著、教材28部；获得专利89项，新产品、新品种等5项，行业地方标准2项。
实验室积极向国内外科研机构和学术团体开放，不断加强与国内外有关单位的学术交流与合作，以期将重点实验室建成本学科领域内进行学术交流的中心。
The Key Laboratory of Tropical Biological Resources of the Ministry of Education of China (KLTBR) is the largest public innovation research base in Hainan University. KLTBR was established in 2005, which was approved for operation by Chinese Ministry of Education. It was created to fulfill the requirements of housing state-of-the-art facilities in molecular biology, pharmacology, biochemistry and medicinal chemistry maintained by well-trained staff. It is guided by a team of highly qualified scientists and offers excellent facilities for internal and external users. Prof. Sulan Luo is the director of KLTBR. The primary aim of the research conducted at KLTBR is to identify and characterize biological molecules that have relevant clinical, medical or industrial applications from rich biological resources of tropical ocean and land of China.
KLTBR is very well equipped to conduct experiments on biology, chemistry and pharmacology research fields, including Automatic Peptide Synthesis Systems, Patch-clamps, Oocyte clamp station, Purification of proteins system, DNA Genetic Analyzer, Electrophoresis system, FluorChem Imaging System, Freeze Dryer, Full Automatic Fermentor, Automatic Microbial Identification System Moduie, Analgesia Meter and Animal care system, Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS), Polycrystalline X-ray Diffractometer, various HPLC, Nutrition catena production, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance(NMR) spectrometers, and Electron Microscopy etc..
