●  Professional Profile

Dr. Zheng Xufeng is a Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor at Hainan Univerisity. He earned his Ph.D. in Marine Geology from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2014. From 2014 to 2020, he conducted research at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS, before joining Hainan University in 2021, where he founded the Polar and Marine Geology Research Team and its affiliated laboratory platform. His international research engagements include collaborative work at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Hong Kong (January-February 2016), a visiting scholarship at the Alfred Wegener Institute (December 2016-December 2017) funded by the China Scholarship Council, and a senior research fellowship at the University of Lausanne (January-April 2025) under the same sponsorship. Recognized for academic excellence, Dr. Zheng was elected as a member of the Youth Innovation Promotion Association of CAS (Guangzhou Branch Committee) in 2018. He received Guangzhou's "Pearl River Science and Technology New Star" Award and the "South China Sea Rising Star" title from his institute in 2019, followed by Guangdong Province's "Outstanding Young Scientific Innovator" distinction in 2020 and Hainan Province's "South China Sea Innovation Talent" honor in 2023. Under his mentorship, the Marine and Polar Geology Supervisor Team was awarded Hainan University's Excellent Graduate Supervisor Team in 2024, with his supervised master's thesis earning the university's Outstanding Thesis Award. As principal investigator, he has led 22 research projects spanning the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Major Research Plan, General and Youth Programs, Hainan Provincial Key R&D Initiatives, and various talent programs across Guangdong, Hainan, and CAS. His collaborative work extends to strategic CAS research priorities and national key technology projects. With 40 SCI publications to his credit, including first-author articles in Nature Communications, Earth and Planetary Science Letters (EPSL), Geophysical Research Letters (GRL), and Journal of Geophysical Research (JGR), his research has gained international recognition through citations in leading journals like Science and Nature Communications. Dr. Zheng maintains active global collaborations with institutions such as Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute, University of Bonn, and GEOMAR; Switzerland's University of Lausanne; France's PSL Research University; Columbia University (USA); and the British Antarctic Survey. His professional service includes committee memberships at the Climate Abrupt Changes Committee of China Quaternary Research Association and Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Geological Resources and Environment, along with review roles for national science funds and provincial talent programs. Notably, he participated in the International Ocean Discovery Program's Antarctic Expedition 382 (2019) and lectured for China's Belt and Road developing countries official training program organized by the Ministry of Commerce (2022).

1地质历史时期深水底流模态与气候临界点的关系;

2工业革命以来地质历史时期西边界流驱动和响应机制;

3地质历史时期南大洋南极绕极流锋面迁移动力机制;

4地质历史时期南大洋大气、海洋和冰盖之间相互作用。

RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research interests Centered on global climate change and Earth's habitability, involving investigating marine environmental evolution through interdisciplinary approaches integrating marine geology, paleoclimate modeling, and big data analytics. The work employs spatiotemporal, multi-proxy, and multidimensional methodologies to explore the evolutionary history of paleo-circulation in the Southern Ocean and North Pacific, as well as their climatic and environmental impacts. Key objectives include:

1) Deciphering relationships between deep-water bottom current regimes and climate tipping points during geological history;

2) Unraveling driving mechanisms and response dynamics of western boundary currents since the Industrial Revolution and across geological eras;

3) Probing dynamic mechanisms governing Antarctic Circumpolar Current frontal migrations in the Southern Ocean through geological time;

4) Reconstructing interactions among atmospheric, oceanic, and cryospheric systems in the Southern Ocean during critical geological periods.
