Our research investigates the mechanisms of plankton acclimation and adaptation to climate changes, integrating molecular, physiological and ecological approaches, across multiple organizational scales—from population to community levels. The main results include: 1) Ocean acidification can alter the interactions between phytoplankton/bacteria and zooplankton in coastal eutrophic areas, and the effects of ocean acidification can be amplified by the food chain; 2) The strain-specific responses of diatoms to ocean acidification may be determined by habitat-adapted imprints; and 3) LTR-retrotransposon and epigenetics such as histone modification, can modulate the processes of diatom adaptation to the environmental change. The results have been published in SCI journals with high IFs, such as Limnology and Oceanography, Environmental Research and Biogeosciences. Based on the previous research, we would like to focus on the following:
(1) Regional variations in the structure and ecological functions of microplankton communities under ongoing global climate change scenarios.
(2) Strategies of phytoplankton (mainly diatoms) acclimation and adaptation to climate changes.
(3) Mechanisms of interactions between microplankton and their responses to environmental change
(4) Development and utilization of widely-adapted and highly-resistant plankton resources
