Land use change is an important global change factor that causes continuous loss and degradation of aquatic biodiversity and its ecosystem functions, and to determine the ecological thresholds of aquatic communities in response to land use change is the key to the conservation of aquatic biodiversity under the pressure of continuous exploitation of global land resources. Using data collected from a total of 13,069 rivers from temperate, subtropical and northern climate zones of eight countries and regions in four continents and characterizing the nonlinear response of aquatic community species composition change to land use change, the thresholds of fish community response to land use change in different geographic zones at the global scale and their consistency in macroscopic spatial scale are for the first time quantitatively elucidated, and the ecological thresholds for the response of fish community composition to watershed urbanization (1%-12%) and agriculturalization (2%-37%) generally occur at lower land use levels; meanwhile, it is clear that the response of freshwater fish community composition to land use change is more sensitive than that of fish abundance; the response pattern of current fish community composition change to the legacy effect of land use is revealed; higher current ecological response thresholds are exhibited in fish communities in watersheds with higher historical land-use increases; and important functional traits that cause differences in the response of aquatic biological groups to different land-use changes are quantitatively revealed, such as body length, water temperature preference, reproductive strategy and trophic strategy. The results of the study provide new insights into the response mechanisms of aquatic community composition to complex dynamic land use changes, and help to consider and set priority management and conservation strategies in areas facing major land use changes.
